The Steelmen proved that they were capable of digging in and grinding out a result with this hard fought victory over a resolute Truro City side. This was not a game for the purists but the most important thing for Corby was to return to winning ways after Monday’s disappointing result. Corby, however, did create the majority of the first half goalscoring opportunities. Paul Malone headed over the bar, Spencer Weir-Daley blasted a shot high after the Truro defence had failed to clear a Greg Mills free kick, Mills had another set-piece comfortably saved by Mike Searle in the visiting goal and Kalern Thomas also hit an effort off target after finding himself free in the penalty area. The best chance, however, fell to Truro after a Corby attack had broken down on the edge of the penalty area. The visitors launched a swift counter attack and Isaac Vassell raced clear with only Paul Walker to beat – but fired his shot wide of the post. This was the general pattern of the first half with Truro being content to soak up pressure and attack on the break. Their main defensive tactic appeared to be to dive at the ball and head it away. The linesman’s flag brought an end to most of their counter attacks while Walker twice had to race out of his box to head the ball clear. The only goal of the game came in the 42nd minute. Cleveland Taylor – providing the right-sided width in the absence of the suspended Wilson Carvalho – dribbled his way along the bye-line and fired a shot at goal. Searle did well to block his effort but Shane Byrne turned the ball into the net at the far post. Taylor almost repeated the move seconds later but this time Searle held onto the cross with Weir-Daley lurking behind him. Truro lost central defender Arran Pugh with a split lip midway through the half and Corby were dealt a blow seconds before the interval when Mills limped off to be replaced by Harry May. May did prove to be a useful addition to the Corby attack in the second half, however, heading one effort just wide and forcing Searle into action with a high, looping shot from distance. Weir-Daley had a shot deflected out for a corner while at the other end Walker made a good save from Craig Duff. Lewis Jackson caused the Truro defence problems with a couple of inswinging corners but no team mates were able to get on the end of them. Truro introduced Barry Hayles to the fray as a substitute but the vastly experienced striker’s most notable contribution to proceedings was to earn a stern telling off from referee Robbie Dadley. Corby were able to play out the final few minutes without any further scares and picked up the three points which lifted them up to third place in the Southern League Premier Division table. THREE headed goals condemned Bideford to a 3-1 defeat against Truro City in the Southern League this afternoon. Cody Cooke scored twice for the visitors and a late own goal from Chris McGrath confirmed their victory in front of 328 supporters at the Sports Ground. Bideford equalised in the first half when a shot from Ben Wood squirmed through the hands of goalkeeper Mike Searle. But the Robins’ frustration was compounded by an 88th-minute red card for Matt Bye following a reckless challenge. After starting the season with three straight defeats, Bideford were boosted by a 3-2 win at Banbury United on Saturday and started today’s game in positive mood. Manager Sean Joyce made two changes to the line-up with McGrath returning to the defence in place of Nick Barker and Lloyd Gardner starting on the right wing with Craig Veal dropping to the bench. Rob Farkins and Craig Duff were included in the Truro team, returning to face their former club for the first time. Truro should have taken the lead when Cooke made a surging run down the right wing and Barry Hayles, the former Plymouth Argyle striker, sliced badly wide at the near post. Cooke then picked out Isaac Vassell who shot into the side-netting as Lloyd Irish rushed out to close down the angle. The breakthrough came on 22 minutes when left back Chris Long stood a cross to the far post and Cooke rose to plant a header into the roof of the net. Bideford responded positively with Sean Downing testing Searle with a stooping header from a long throw by Ben Wood. The keeper dealt comfortably with that effort but will have nightmares about the equaliser scored by Wood in the 32nd minute. Downing controlled the ball and ran at the defence before picking out Wood whose shot from just inside the area somehow slipped through. Bideford were enjoying their best spell and Wood went close again, drilling into the side-netting after a quickly taken free kick from Bye. After the hosts stole possession from Duff just outside the box, Bye almost wriggled through the entire defence, only to see his effort scrambled to safety by Farkins. Truro replaced Hayles with Ben Watson at half time and the sub needed just four minutes to make an impact, combining with Cooke to restore the lead. Cooke continued his run into the box and when Watson fired the ball across goal, the forward reacted brilliantly to head past Irish into the top corner. The visitors could have increased their advantage as Duff shot over and Vassell went past Irish but saw Stephen Reed get back to clear off the line. Matt Wright, the Bideford striker, continued to cause problems for the Truro defence, competing well in the aerial duel against Farkins and Aaron Pugh. When Wright went in for a challenge with Searle the ball dropped for Richard Groves who could only shoot wide of the unguarded goal from a tight angle. It was a big chance for Bideford and there was a sense it would not be their day when, moments later, Downing’s neat finish at the end of a slick move was ruled out for offside. Truro began to assert their authority in midfield again and Irish had to save with his legs when Watson raced clear from a flick by Vassell. Duff then missed a chance to score against his former club, scuffing wide when Vassell turned down the opportunity to shoot. If Searle was at fault for Bideford’s goal, the keeper made amends with an excellent save to tip a free kick from Groves against the post. And Truro finally sealed the win with eight minutes to go when McGrath, under pressure from Duff, could only head a corner from Dan Green into his own net. There was still time for Groves to test Searle with another curling effort before Bideford’s slim hopes of getting back in the game ended with the red card for Bye. Having been dismissed in the goalless draw between the sides on Boxing Day, the midfielder was sent off for a second successive game against Truro. Truro City beat Hungerford Town 2-1

Truro City won their first home game of the season as Ben Watson came off the bench to score twice in their 2-1 victory over Hungerford Town. After a stalemate in the first half Watson came on for Barry Hayles with 30 minutes to go and hit the opener three minutes later. The striker doubled his tally with 16 minutes left before the visitors pulled one back late in the game. Josh Beech’s second half penalty ensured Cambridge City took a point from their first home game of the new season. City had the better of the opening minutes, with Danny Kelly and Callum Donnelly in particular looking threatening. But Truro also created two good chances from set pieces thanks to Jake Ash and evergeen veteran striker Barry Hales. The visitors grew into the game as the first half wore on and took the lead on the half hour after a spell of pressure when Isaac Vassell’s strike took a deflection off Will Lawton and beat City keeper Zac Barrett. Yet City got back on level terms in the 64th minute. Donnelly was brought down by Truro keeper Kyle Moore and Beech slotted home the resulting spot kick. Both sides pushed for the winner, with City coming closest after Kelly’s first-time strike from the edge of the box rattled the underside of the crossbar.
