Truro City will 'go down fighting', says boss Lee Hodges

Source BBC Sport LINK

Truro City manager Lee Hodges says his team will 'go down fighting' as they try and avoid relegation from Blue Square Bet South.

City are 17 points from safety at the bottom of the table after going into administration last year, suffering a 10-point penalty and transfer embargo.

New owners have taken over the club and Hodges is positive about the future.

"We've got to get a bit of pride now and can start getting some points on the board," he told BBC Cornwall.

"If we do go down, we will go down fighting. If we stay up, it'll be an unbelievable achievement.

"If we do go down, it's a case of getting a team together that can compete in the next league, to try and get up again into this league."

Earlier this week, former Truro boss Steve Massey returned as head of football development, and Hodges says the club is also starting to improve off the field after the takeover by Pete Masters and Philip Perryman.

"The structure is getting put in place which is great, and that's what you want at the club.

"You go away to all these other clubs and see their setups and you look at ours and it's never been like that.

"But now Pete's getting it all in place and trying to get load of people on board to do jobs and make the club run more efficiently."

He added: "This is the start of hopefully a very long and upcoming Truro City that hasn't been there for a few years."

Lee aims to sign new defenders

Source BBC Sport LINK

Truro City boss Lee Hodges says he needs to strengthen his side's defence if they are to have any chance of staying in the Blue Square Bet South.

City have conceded 52 goals this season and Hodges has called for improvements at the back.

"Going forward we are creating a lot of chances and are dangerous and we look solid in midfield," Hodges said.

"It's just at the back where we need to change things around I feel," he added to BBC Radio Cornwall.

Truro are 18 points from safety at the bottom of Blue Square Bet South with 18 games to go.

City appointed former manager Steve Massey last week as head of football development and Hodges hopes the pair can work together to strengthen the White Tigers' squad.

"Speaking to Steve during the week we're going to try and maybe change one or two personnel.

"Steve's come in here to help the club and to possibly get a few players in when I can't go out and look as we're playing on Saturdays and Tuesday.

"I want him to go out there and find me some talent to bring into the club to take us forward as we're not too far away from competing in the higher echelons of this league.

"There's still a lot of points to play for and it's just about getting a bit of pride and those points on the board."

Chelmsford City's match report

Source: Chelmsford City official site LINK

Glenn Pennyfather repeated that "every game is important" as the Clarets aim to claw back a points deficit on the leaders, and he was delighted that his team emerged victorious at Truro City thanks to second-half strikes from Jamie Slabber and Kyle Vassell.

His side managed to gain three points on top side Salisbury City, who didn't play, despite Joe Broad's 90th-minute reply for the hosts which made for a tense period of injury time. He said: "We managed to get the win in what were really tough conditions, what with the heavy, sticky pitch and the strong win. You had to concentrate all the time."

"In the second half we had the wind behind us but we had to get the ball out wide more and really get at their full-backs. Our first was a great goal, with the cross from Aiden [Palmer] then Jamie's header, then the second from Kyle has given us that cushion. We looked comfortable and their goal at the end was from our only bit of lax defending in the whole game. We're back to winning ways, and every game is important at this stage to build momentum."

Due to the wintry weather, Chelmsford hadn't played for two weeks since their match at FC Halifax Town in the FA Trophy on 12th January. During that time, right-back Richard Brindley had been snapped-up by Football League club Chesterfield, so Bradley Hamilton took his place. In the centre of defence, Kenny Clark came in as Captain for Justin Miller, while Vassell was selected ahead of Sam Corcoran in midfield.

Truro crafted the majority of the first-half chances in what was a meagre opening period for shots on goal. In the 5th minute there was a double opportunity when a defensive clearance tested Clarets goalkeeper Stuart Searle, then Les Afful went close with the follow-up. Five minutes later a far-post hear from Andrew Watkins narrowly missed the target.

With a stiff breeze blowing across Treyew Road, Chelmsford didn't concern Truro custodian Luke McCormick until the 25th minute, Slabber dribbling around him but striking wide. This was quickly followed by another chance at the other end as Watkins beat Clark but his shot took a deflection off Mark Haines for a Truro corner. On 35 minutes, the Cornwall side threatened again through Joe Broad's header, which drifted inches wide.

It was the hosts with the first attempt seconds after the interval, too. They almost grabbed an early second-half goal as Kieffer Moore got his foot to a free kick and Searle had to tip the ball over. Moore tried again just afterwards to no avail, but it was the Clarets who moved in front. Palmer's swinging, 53rd-minute cross provided Slabber with the type of opportunity he's made his name from, heading home powerfully to make it 1-0.

Chelmsford's confidence visibly increased, culminating in a second on 69 minutes. Max Cornhill's brilliant through ball put Vassell one-on-one with McCormick and the young winger rounded him before tapping home and doubling the lead. Truro will have been disheartened by that, having competed well throughout the contest.

Nevertheless they continued to challenge. Searle was forced to make a brilliant save from Watkins as the ball was knocked on towards him from a free kick near the corner flag, then Chelmsford substitute Craig Parker, who'd been on the field for just two minutes, prodded wide of the target from a couple of yards at the death.

Truro's Broad ensured Pennyfather's men weren't able to cruise towards the final whistle, thumping home in the final minute of normal time. But the visitors earned the points which elevated them into the top five, with a home game against Dorchester Town coming up on Monday which could see them move up further to fourth position.

City Alerts - Lee's view plus some new match dates

LEE'S VIEW on Truro City   0   Chelmsford City   2:

"It was the same old same old, unfortunately.  As we've seen so many times this season, the boys played really well and didn't deserve to lose.  We know where our frailties are and hopefully we will be in a position to strengthen soon.

"It was so disappointing to see them come away with nothing after battling so hard against one of the league's top sides, on a heavy pitch.  You look at where Chelmsford are in the league, but I don't think they were any better than us.

You cannot fault the boys' attitude.  Time and again this season, they have given it their all and held their own against the best the league can offer.  They are all bitterly disappointed.  We will not give up;  we will continue to work hard together as a group.  We all know where the problems lie, but because of the circumstances beyond our control we have not been able to rectify them."

The postponed visit to Sutton United has been rearranged for Tuesday, March 12, kick-off 7.45 pm.

The rearranged date for Eastleigh v Truro City is Tuesday 16th April  KO 7.45pm.

Mansell Wallace Chelmsford City Chairman accepts a token of thanks

The two City's bond of friendship took a step closer yesterday as Truro City Chairman, Pete Masters presented the Chelmsford City Chairman, Mansell Wallace, a players signed and mounted shirt.  Chelmsford City played a significant part in keeping the dream alive last Autumn and the pitch presentation was a token of thanks.  The evening was then spent with club management and around 200 fans at a special disco to re-launch the Penalty Spot.  A top night was had by all.

Several "welcome" signs were dotted around the clubhouse.

More home misery for Truro City

By Rhod Mitchell West Briton Source: This is Cornwall LINK

Truro City 1 Chelmsford City 2

THE black clouds that greeted the end of the game just about summed up the day for Truro as their fast fading hopes of mounting a great escape from relegation suffered another blow.

Second half goals by James Slabber and Kyle Vassell put the promotion-chasing Essex side 2-0 and although Joe Broad, with his first goal of the season, pulled one back in stoppage time, City slumped to their 15th Blue Square Bet South game of the season.

Yet again though City had plenty of the game and looked good going forward, but their defensive Achilles heel again cost them dearly as they conceded two sloppy goals.

In the first half, with the wind at their backs, City were the more dangerous side with Kieffer Moore and Andy Watkins proving a handful for the visitors' defence.

Both came close to giving City the lead with Ben Williams also heading over.

At the other end Slabber missed Chelmsford's best opening when he shot wide.

Truro began the second half well with Moore forcing a superb point blank save out of Chelmsford keeper Stuart Searle, while Broad shot over.

But it was the Essex side who took the lead after 53 minutes when full-back Aiden Palmer was allowed to cross from the left to give an unmarked Slabber a simple far post header for his 17th goal of the season.

It was a body blow for the home side and they went further behind after 70 minutes when Max Cornhill played in Kyle Vassell, who rounded Luke McCormick before finding the unguarded net.

Searle produced another quality save to deny Watkins with 15 minutes left but it was not until the first minute of added time that Broad opened City's account with a low drive through a crowded area.

But it was all too late, leaving a dejected City rooted on nine points and 18 points from safety.
In contrast, the win moved Chelmsford up to third.

Truro City looking for home joy against Clarets, by Rhod Mitchell

Source This is Cornwall LINK

Truro City will be loooking for their first win of 2013 when they take on promotion hopefuls Chelmsford City at Treyew Road on Saturday (3pm).

The league's bottom club last won back on December 1 with a 2-0 home victory over Tonbridge Angels and despite some encouraging performances they have taken just two points out of a possible 21 from their last seven games.

And they are sure to find the Essex visitors tough opposition, though Clarets boss Glenn Pennyfather is also expecting a difficult game for his sixth-placed team who are only out of the play-off places on goal difference.

He said. "Truro are a decent side who've been very unlucky this season. We know from our home game against them that they'll be no pushovers and what they've been through together will have made them stronger. We're both back off the enforced 'winter break' and we're looking forward to the game."

Truro lost narrowly 3-2 in the teams' meeting in Essex back in September and manager Lee Hodges know how strong a side Chelmsford are.

He said: "Chelmsford are one of the best sides in the league and I rate them very highly."

After having their last two games against Sutton and Eastleigh postponed, City will be raring to get back into action before away trips to Dover Ath and Hayes and Yeading on the following two Saturdays.

Hodges will miss the game through suspension and there are no new injury worries, with Marcus Martin returning after serving his one match ban.

City's boss added: "We had a good training session last night, with everyone there and in good spirits and everyone very keen to play a match again.

"From the weather forecast, I can't see a problem for tomorrow so we're all hoping for a really good game and a good crowd to cheer on the boys. There's no doubt it's going to be a very tough match."

Truro squad: Luke McCormick, Bobby Hopkinson, Calron Hall, Jake Ash, Marcus Martin, Ben Williams, Joe Broad, Cody Cooke, Les Afful, Andy Watkins, Kieffer Moore, Barry Hayles, Martin Watts, Matt Wright.

City Alerts update

The revised Truro City structure chart, incorporating this week's latest appointments - Steve Massey and Rudi Grenfell - is now clearly displayed in the clubhouse for all to see.

For anyone with specific queries about the structure and future direction of the club, our Chairman, Peter Masters, will be standing near the turnstiles from 2.30 pm on Saturday (for the match against Chelmsford) and will be happy to answer questions.

Ground Facilities Manager Mark Brent may require help on Saturday morning with forking the pitch if we have as much rain as forecast in the meantime - in which case, watch out for a further City Alert.

Every effort must be made to get this game played, especially as Chelmsford will be staying in the area overnight Fri/Sat and this club, you will recall, were particularly supportive of us in our "darkest hour" last autumn.

Jack Murley interview with Steve Massey today

Club Statement - Steve Massey appointed as Head of Football Development

Following the off-pitch appointments at Truro City Football Club, the Board has turned to matters on the pitch with the appointment of Steve Massey as Head of Football Development,  which will embrace the First, Second, Youth and Ladies teams with the emphasis on working with the team managers, whilst attracting the very best players within the county to the Club and developing their skills to play at the highest standard possible.

Truro City Chairman Peter Masters said:

"Steve Massey brings with him the additional football knowledge and experience the Club needs at this decisive time, given the historical problems and the 10-point deduction from both the first and second teams at the beginning of September, 2012, as a penalty for entering Administration.

The reality is that the second team looks secure in its League, being currently positioned out of the drop zone, which is in contrast to the first team which so far this season has won only five of the twenty three games played, lost the last three and are now 16 points adrift at the bottom of the Conference South League (and still would be without the 10 points deduction) with just nineteen games remaining.

Therefore as Chairman it is encumbering on me to take action now and as such it will be Steve's first task to support Lee Hodges as first team manager in every way possible to ensure that we have a squad that is capable of returning to its winning form in an attempt to avoid relegation whilst planning for every eventuality in future. It is still mathematically possible to stay up and anything can happen and even more so when you consider the financial status of one or two other Clubs in this League at this particular time".

Steve Massey will be at his post from Monday 21st January 2013

Lee is pleased by progress of Moore

Source: Western Morning News

Truro City player-manager Lee Hodges has hailed the form of rookie striker Kieffer Moore.

In the wake of Tuesday's agonising stoppage-time 4-3 Blue Square Bet South setback at leaders Salisbury City, Hodges said: "One of the big positives to come out of Tuesday's defeat was Kieffer's goal and second-half performance."

Torbay-based Moore has scored five goals in City's last four games. Hodges – whose side's match today at second-from-bottom Sutton United was postponed last night because of a frozen pitch at the Surrey club's Gander Green Lane ground – said: "Kieffer has come on leaps and bounds in recent weeks.

"He was always going to be on a learning curve in this first season at this level but in the past month or so he has been phenomenal.

"It's not just the goals and the way he has taken them, but it's also got a lot to do with the fact that he has started to grow into the role. He has taken a while to take things on board but I think the penny has dropped.

"He's 6ft 3in, good with his feet, and has scored a couple of cracking goals recently that show he knows where the back of the net is, and that's vital for a striker.

"He's also full of surprises. Watching him in the first half on Tuesday you may have thought 'he's OK' although in fairness, having reviewed the DVD, he did not get the best service. In the second half he was something special again, hard to handle and showed what he is all about."

Despite coming back from 2-0 and 3-2 down to level thanks to goals from veteran front-runner Barry Hayles, young Moore and fit-again Martin Watts, Truro were beaten by a stoppage-time Jamie White winner.

Hodges said: "It was a gutter. Conceding winning goals in stoppage time is always a blow and we had done so well to get back into the game, again and again. But the pleasing thing for me is that we gave the leaders a right good run for their money all the way."

Hodges played at left-back on Tuesday, after switching Ben Williams to centre-back alongside skipper Jake Ash. The Truro boss will have a one-match suspension to serve when City return to action.

The former Plymouth Argyle stalwart said: "It will be quite nice to get back on the touchline, managing the team from the sidelines again and having the time to look at the game from a different perspective, rather than being in the thick of it."

Re-launch of the "Penalty Spot"

Saturday 26th January - 7pm

Next Saturday night will see the re-launch of the Penalty Spot at Treyew Road.  Ray Jennings has organised the Tom Mellow 60's and 70's disco from 7pm til 1pm.  In addition, a Beatles tribute band called Not the Beatles will also be performing.  Drinks will be £2.50.  Entry is free!  Link to Not the Beatles website is HERE

This has all the makings of a top night, especially as some of the Chelmsford fans will be staying over.  And on that note, we should remember that Chelmsford were one of our closest allies during our darkest hours last Autumn.  The Chelmsford Chairman, Mansell Wallace gave generously to the cause and even held bucket collections for our players.  It goes without saying that we will welcome our friends from Essex.

City Alerts - Lee's view on Salisbury

TEAM NEWS for tomorrow's visit to Sutton United, kick-off 3 pm:

MARCUS MARTIN returns from suspension, but one-match ban for LEE HODGES (sending-off at Welling).  No new injuries.  Squad:  Luke McCormick, Bobby Hopkinson, Calron Hall, Jake Ash, Marcus Martin, Ben Williams, Joe Broad, Cody Cooke, Les Afful, Andy Watkins, Kieffer Moore, Barry Hayles, Martin Watts, Matt Wright.

Squad travelling tomorrow, so match on-or-off reviewed tonight.

LEE'S REFLECTIONS on Salisbury City   4   Truro City   3:  "It just seemed to sum up our season, really.  I felt we got a lot of pride back after our performance against Billericay.  It was obviously a sickener to lose in stoppage time away to a top team for the second time in 11 days.  I've looked at that goal on the video to see what we could have done differently, but we had enough players behind the ball, everyone was getting back, Ben's got to the ball first, but then their boy scores from a difficult angle, and there's just not a lot you can do about that.

"We could perhaps have taken a short corner to play out time and protect the point, but we had a chance of getting all three points and we needed them desperately.  It didn't happen, but I'm really proud of the boys.  It was totally different from Billericay.  Now we must perform at Sutton, who surprisingly are second from bottom.  We seem to struggle against these teams, so we have to change that tomorrow.   In a strange way, I will actually enjoy being on the sidelines because it means I should be able to manage the side better.  Looking back, I see I've started 18 games this season, and I never expected to be starting more than around five by now!"

Salisbury match report by Joel Holt (Courtesy Salisbury Journal)

Blue Square Bet South Salisbury City 4-3 Truro City

Salisbury City: Scott, Udoji (Matthews 83), J Clarke, Dutton (c), Hart, Sinclair, Lewis, Frear, McPhee, Fitchett (Brett 59), White

Subs not used: Clark, Ademeno, D Clarke

Scorers: McPhee (7, 26), Lewis (65) White (90)
Att: 533

JAMIE White’s spectacular injury time winner racked up a vital three points for Salisbury City and left their Cornish rivals devastated in a gripping finale at the Ray Mac.

Darrell Clarke’s side were frustratingly foiled until the 90th minute, when White dramatically netted the winner from the tightest of angles.
A brace from Chris McPhee put the Old Sarum team in a dominant position, but the Tinmen halved the deficit just seconds before the interval through Barry Hayles. Kieffer Moore added insult to injury by planting home the equaliser in the 46th minute. Theo Lewis restored the hosts’ advantage inside 65 minutes, but two minutes later, Martin Watts ruined the temporary celebrations, by making it 3-3.

But White’s thunderous strike, created huge cheers inside the fortress and put the leaders up to 52 points.

Mark Scott was recalled to Salisbury’s first XI, ahead of Will Puddy, who’s out with a broken collar

A Frosty, chilly and icy Tuesday evening may have tampered with Salisbury’s plans to brush aside rock-bottom Truro. But within seven minutes, a swift pass from Udoji into the path of McPhee, was whacked into the net in style.

White went close moments later, but his left-footed effort was blocked by Luke McCormick.

And as a second looked predictable, it came just before the half-hour mark through inform McPhee, who sealed his eighth league goal of the season. Becoming notorious for good deliveries, Elliott Frear assisted the second, which was pounded home at a far post by McPhee. Lee Hodges’ ten man squad posed little danger in the first-half, and the closest they came to even remotely bringing Mark Scott into action, was Watts’ shot which was struck well, but drifted over the bar.

Two goal hero McPhee nearly setup a third before the break, but his rapid delivery flew over his teammates’ head.

Then McPhee nearly got his first hat-trick for the club which he is so desperate to get, as Frear’s delivery clipped the 29-year-old’s ankle, and nearly smuggled into the corner.

But Salisbury’s comprehensive display was not matched with the 2-0 lead they deserved. A self-destructive error from Scott allowed Hayles to swoop and scoop one back for the Tinmen. And Truro entered the second-period as they ended the first, silencing the home fans. Sluggish defending let the Whites’ lead slip away, with Moore cleaning up on Callum Hart’s stumble and fired home the leveller.

Frear had a couple of plausible efforts on goal, and so did Ryan Brett, but both failed to get beneath McCormick.

But a thunderous volley from Lewis, got City’s lead back in the 65th minute, but it was cancelled out two minutes later. Watts, on the spin, punished City’s woeful attempt to clear the danger and made it 3-3.

But Truro, who looked to have earned a valuable point away from Treyew Road, failed to deal with a brisk counter-attack from the hosts, which consequently scuppered that chance.

Terrific vision from Brett, played a fantastic through ball into White, who from an acute angle, took it round McCormick and smashed into the bottom corner. Darrell Clarke’s reaction encapsulated huge relief around the Ray Mac.

More stoppage time heartbreak for Truro City

By Rhod Mitchell of This is Cornwall

Salisbury City 4 Truro City 3

TRURO suffered more stoppage time agony as they went down to the Blue Square Bet South leaders on Tuesday evening.

Goals from Barry Hayles, Kieffer Moore and Martin Watts looked to have earned Truro a share of the spoils, until the Wiltshire side broke away in added time following a City corner to snatch a cruel winner through Jamie White.

After Saturday's depressing 4-2 home defeat against Billericay Town, it looked a daunting trip for City and when they went 2-0 down to two early goals from former Torquay United striker Chris McPhee their prospects loooked bleak.

But on a cold night at the Raymond McEnhill Stadium, City pulled a goal back right on half time when Hayles took advantage of a mistake by home keeper Mark Scott.

And it got better for the visitors immediately after the restart when top scorer Kieffer Moore finished well for his 11th goal of the season.

Although Theo Lewis put Salisbury 3-2 up after 66 minutes Truro continued to believe and soon equalised with Moore setting up Watts who rifled the ball into the top corner.

But as at Welling in their previous away game, they could not hold on to what would have been a precious and unexpected point.

Now manager Lee Hodges must lift his shattered troops for Saturday's visit to second from bottom Sutton Utd who are 16 points clear of rock bottom Truro.

Salisbury City: Scott, Udoji (Ademeno 85), Hart, Sinclair, Dutton, J Clarke, McPhee, Lewis, White, Fitchett (Brett 62), Frear. Subs (not used): Matthews, M Clarke, D Clarke.

Truro City: McCormick, Hopkinson, Williams, Hodges, Ash, Broad, Cooke, Watts (Watkins 74), Moore, Hayles (Wright 80), Afful. Subs (not used): Hall.

Goals: McPhee (7) 1-0, McPhee (28) 2-0, Hayles (45) 2-1, Moore (46) 2-2, Lewis (67) 3-2, Watts (70) 3-3, White (90 +1) 4-3.

A Billericay fan's blog of a Day in Truro (a great read!)

A Day in Truro (well a bit less actually) Non League link

Saturday 12 January 2013. I was picked up by chauffeur Gazz at stupid o’clock and early discussions resulted in the bold statement that we couldn’t be as bad as we were on the previous Tuesday at Eastleigh. That said we weren’t exactly overflowing with confidence given that our away form was about as good as Pamela Anderson on ice-skates.

Chauffeur Gazz had decided to go south round the M25 and then via the M3 and A303. I was quite pleased about this as it is a far more interesting route and also gives you a chance to see what the traffic on the Bridge is like early in the morning. Unfortunately, our plans to take in the sights en route were quickly scuppered by the continuing gloom and hammering rain and sleet. Having aqua-planed through most of Wiltshire (Stonehenge might as well have been called Murkhenge) we arrived at the Little Chef for a scheduled stop.

In these circumstances the controversially named Olympic Breakfast is almost compulsory (replacing the tomato with fried bread just in case there is an element of goodness in it). I did wonder whether they had to change it to the “Lympic” Breakfast during the Games period, much like the café in Stratford had to. Anyway, hearty brekkie eaten, we were now set up for the day ahead.

The rest of the journey there was relatively uneventful with chauffeur Gazz learnedly pointing out that the A303 is a road that starts nowhere and ends nowhere. We skated past Exeter and continued along the A30. You know you are on a long journey when you see a sign saying “Truro 45” and think that you are nearly there.

Anyway navigator Emma safely got us the rest of the way to the B&B and we had actually arrived about an hour early at around 11.15. Thankfully the staff at the Donnington Guest House (shameless plug hoping for discount next time) were very helpful and we were soon sorted out with our rooms. I skilfully picked a room at the back of the house with a large bathroom and great views over the City.

Some careful pre-planning meant that the B&B was bang opposite the Football Club and we took advantage of our knowledge that the Club bar was open at noon and that the beer was a very respectable £2.50 a pint all day. I felt obliged to drink quite a lot of it as the price was so good and we were soon joined by a more than decent contingent of fellow Blues Fans.

Just prior to kick off my Olympic Breakfast was beginning to feel like a Commonwealth one at best so I headed out to get some more food. As we were in Cornwall it seemed like the obvious thing to do was to get a pasty but I knew they were bad for you so had a cheeseburger instead.

We started the game ridiculously well and went ahead after five minutes with a good goal from Jay. It was hard to see what could go wrong at this stage, everything was going so well and we were totally dominant. Oh well, these things happen in football but it was nice of Charlie to wave at the home support on his way back to the dressing room. We were under a bit of pressure for the rest of the half but kept a pretty good shape and went in one-up.
At half-time the talk was whether we could hang on but things got even better as Jay looped a header over a back line and keeper who looked like they were playing musical statues. They got a goal back with a free kick, which shouldn’t have been given…….as it was a penalty.

Jay then completed a perfect hat trick by side-shinning home with his left foot following good work by Semakula. I thought Jay might have contracted rabies or something because he was running around a lot and occasionally foaming at the mouth. My diagnosis was confirmed minutes later as he out-paced the defence and produced a great finish to make it 4-1, sensibly avoiding a collision with home keeper Luke McCormick. At this point I was told to “Shut up, you muppet!” by one of the home supporters – He clearly wasn’t very intelligent as he missed an obvious opportunity to get the adjective “fat” in there.

Truro pulled a goal back to make it 4-2, the referee and the Angelos Epithemiou lookylikey lino failing to spot that Semakula had been chopped at the knees in the build-up. We saw out the rest of the game and the final whistle was the cue for some great celebrations of an away win secured playing with ten men for 70 minutes.

We had another couple of beers in the Clubhouse and congratulated the team and management before heading back to the B&B for a brief pit stop.

I didn’t really know what to expect from the evening as everyone was suffering from varying degrees of “tiredness”. We pulled into the William IV (having blown out the One-Eyed Cat because it was so rammed) and ran into another group of Blues fans, some of who were sporting some rather lively garb. Having consumed dinner (which was respectable but not brilliant) the others in my group decided to call it a day. Unfortunately the walk back to the B&B was up a hill that made Val D’Isere look like the Norfolk Broads and I could have done with a blast of oxygen having somehow hauled my lardy frame to the top.

I decided it was far too early to pack it in and went back to the Clubhouse to drink some more beer. Trevor who was the Truro Bar Manager (and an absolute top man to boot) was still there so I had another few beers. I was joined at some stage by some of the other Blues fans and whilst what goes on tour stays on tour, suffice it to say there were some surreal moments involving the VH1 80s Disco on TV and the world being ordered from the local pizza/kebab/chicken (You know what I mean) place.

11 o’clock signalled the death knell for me and I struggled across the road in the now pouring rain to the B&B and watched the end of Match of the Day. This did create a minor problem as when I put the TV back on standby it made a strange buzzing noise, which was only resolved by unplugging virtually every appliance in the room.

Sunday 13 January 2013. We got up reasonably early for breakfast. I didn’t have too much as I was still feeling a bit fragile following the previous night and didn’t want to run the risk of leaving a present on chauffer Gazz’s back seat. Those that did go the “Full Monty” said how nice it was and I must admit the bacon and sausages looked a cut above the standard fayre in these places.

After breakfast we settled up and went on our merry way. I showed the kind of bladder control I thought I had lost twenty years ago by making it to Fleet Services before requesting a “comfort break”

We arrived safely back home just before two, in time to put my feet up in front of the telly and endure a Manchester double. It was a great weekend, with great people and exactly what Non-League football should be all about.

Come on you Blues!!

(You've got to do one now UM!)

City Alerts - Lee's view on Billericay

LEE'S VIEW on City 2 Billericay 4:

"I was bitterly disappointed with the whole team's performance. We looked sluggish - we weren't at it at all. It wasn't the team I'd expected to go out and perform. For such an important game, I had hoped the boys would have been on fire, but it didn't happen. I'm not going to be negative about it all - two months ago we didn't have a club, and we mustn't lose sight of the current context.

"That said, I apologise to all the fans. They were there in good spirit and good numbers and singing and supporting us throughout and they deserved better. The boys have given it their all, again and again, and they looked a bit leggy on Saturday.

I changed the system at half-time. I thought the three of us at the back could deal with their striker, but we couldn't - everything he touched turned to gold. We gambled a bit too soon, perhaps, hoping to get the goals back; I may have got it wrong tactically.

"We always miss Andy Watkins, of course; he brings great movement, but I'm not going to dwell on negatives. As far as I'm concerned, it's fantastic that the club is still alive and the boys will never give up. My attitude is that we move on; we will keep battling in every game and for as long as there are points to be gained we will give it everything we've got."

Lee on MATT WRIGHT, new signing on non-contract basis: "He's an out-and-out striker and I just felt we particularly needed reinforcing in that direction. He came for a trial with us last season, from Salisbury, at around the same time I signed Adam Kelly from that club. He's a Plymouth lad in his early 20s and after his trial with us he moved to Sweden. He's since come back and played for Poole Town this season."

TEAM NEWS for tomorrow's visit to Salisbury: MARCUS MARTIN suspended. Late check on ANDY WATKINS, chest infection. Squad: Luke McCormick, Bobby Hopkinson, Calron Hall, Jake Ash, Lee Hodges, Ben Williams, Joe Broad, Cody Cooke, Les Afful, Andy Watkins, Kieffer Moore, Barry Hayles, Martin Watts, Matt Wright.

STEWART YETTON update: "My target is subs bench three to four weeks from now."

UPCOMING FIXTURES (all League): Tues, Jan 15, away to Salisbury City, 7.45 pm; Sat, Jan 19, away to Sutton United, 3 pm; Tues, Jan 22, away to Eastleigh, 7.45 pm; Sat, Jan 26, home to Chelmsford, 3 pm; Sat, Feb 02, away to Dover Athletic, 3 pm; Sat, Feb 09, away to Hayes & Reading, 3 pm; Sat, Feb 16, home to Staines Town; Tues, Feb 19 subject to confirmation, home to Dorchester, 7.45 pm; Sat, Feb 23, away to Bath City, 3 pm; Tues, Feb 26, home to Weston-Super-Mare.

LIGHT RELIEF: I am currently reading Frank O'Farrell's autobiography and I had to laugh at this extract: "I didn't play much (for Preston North End) in the 1960-61 season . . . The manager (Cliff Britton) told me I wasn't being retained . . . then Weymouth, in the Southern League, came in and offered me the position of player-manager. The funny thing was, I'd been on £20 per week at Preston - the maximum wage at the time - and Weymouth upped that to £25 and I also got a car and a house." Eat your heart out, Lee!

City suffer huge blow to hopes of escaping the drop

Source: Rhod Mitchell, This is Cornwall LINK

Truro City 2 Billericay Town 4

Truro's hopes of Blue Square Bet South survival suffered a probably fatal blow as they went down to fellow strugglers Billericay, who played for more than an hour with ten men after the sending off of striker Charlie Taylor.

The Essex side's hero was striker Jay May, who scored all four of his team's goals, to condemn City to a damaging defeat.

It was a very poor display by the home side who are now 17 points adrift at the foot of the table ahead of Tuesday's trip to leaders Salisbury City.

The game began badly for City as Taylor played in May who finished well past a helpless Luke McCormick.

But City were then given a boost when Taylor was red carded midway through the half.

The Billericay striker had just been booked, along with City's Calron Hall, after an off the ball altercation, but then continued to mouth off at referee Steve Daly who gave him a straight red.

But City we unable to take advantage of their numerical superiority and went further behind at the start of the second half when May was allowed to head home unchallenged to make it 2-0.

Substitute Martin Watts gave City hope with a 65th minute free kick, but almost immediately May completed his hat-trick and soon added a fourth after Truro we caught short at the back.

Kieffer Moore did score a consolation second for City ten minutes from time, but it was too late to save them from a disastrous defeat.

New signing Matt Wright came on as a late sub for City.

City Alerts - Lee's View on Welling

WELLING UNITED  4  TRURO CITY  3

Not the best of weekends for City, with first a coach breakdown on the way up on the Friday night - a delay of around two-and-a-half hours and eventually arriving at the hotel around 12.15 a.m. - and then Lee's highly controversial sending-off that swung the game Welling's way.

LEE'S VIEW on his sending-off:  "I have studied the DVD supplied by Welling and it's inconclusive.  I spoke to the ref at the time of the incident and he said 'Lee, I'm going to have to send you off because you were the last man.'  But a picture in the gallery on the Welling club website clearly shows that Calron Hall was standing on the goal  line, as well as me touching the ball with my foot.  I'll be talking to Tracey today and also waiting to see what exactly the referee says in his report.  Then I will decide whether to appeal or not.

"I am absolutely certain that I got the ball and that a penalty should not have been awarded.  There is no doubt in my mind at all that I got the ball.  I just could not believe he'd given a penalty.  I asked him to at least consult his assistant on the line.  I said 'Speak to him, please.'  He wouldn't, so I went over to the assistant and said 'Talk to the referee,' but he just told me to go away.  I wasn't being provocative - I was just asking them to talk to each other and work together."

LEE's overall verdict:  "The sending-off was the reason we lost.  The boys were brilliant and if we'd kept 11 players we would have won that game, no question.  We were at sea for the first 15 minutes because I changed our normal tactics.   I asked them to play a little bit differently; Welling got on top of us and we deservedly went a goal down.  So I changed it again after that goal and for the next half-hour we just dominated and were excellent value for our 3-1 lead at half-time;  we were playing really well and Kieffer Moore and Andy Watkins were causing mayhem upfront.

"For the first 15 minutes or so of the second half, nothing really changed and we looked really comfortable;  it looked as if it would be us if anyone was going to score again.  After my sending-off, I had to go to the dressing room so I can't comment on the remainder of the match.

"But there were so many positives to take back with us.  We had achieved this level of performance away to a team that many fancy for the title and who have now gone 12 wins on the trot.  We just have to work at taking that level of performance into each and every game now, starting with Billericay at home on Saturday and hopefully the good crowd that the boys deserve.  I've set the boys a target.  We have a slim chance of avoiding relegation;  it's a big ask, but it is achievable.  One thing you can be sure of is that we will compete and give it a right go."

MARCUS MARTIN will miss match at Salisbury City, January 15, suspended after sending-off at Dorchester.
RE-ARRANGED MATCH at home Dorchester still subject to confirmation, provisionally fixed for February 19.

TISA Members Meeting

TISA Members Meeting - 12:30 Saturday 12th January 2013 at the Railway Club, Truro

If anyone wants to join, please send a message to trurofans hotmail address, with your email address and we'll send you a form.  Applications received by Friday will be processed by the committee before the commencement of the meeting on Saturday.

Update on Truro City Fans Trust - Statement

Issued on behalf of Will Jones, Trust Chairman

It is with regret I am announcing the end of the Truro City Fans Trust. Having said that the trust had originally been set up to help save Truro City FC, and now thankfully we still have a club with massive thanks to Peter Masters and Pep Perryman. Without them we would have no club.

Peter is keen to make sure trust members have a role within the club to help make sure it remains a community club. As such he has asked me to fill the role of Operations Manager, this role is voluntary and I shall receive no money for any work I do, I want that to be clear from the start.

Peter and Pep really have a dream of transforming this club, and putting it on a solid footing for the future. Emphasis on developing local talent, helping improve Cornish football and trying to brand the club as a county project. All key aims of the trust.

I can't thank everyone enough for all your hard work over the last few months, and you all deserve a pat on the back. I think it's fair to say we never really dreamed of being in the position we are now.

If anyone wants to amalgamate their Trust role into something directly involving the club could you let me know please! Don't be shy. If you have done so already credit to you. I can't guarantee a role but will do what I can.

A trust meeting will be held in due course to deal with any outstanding matters. This meeting will be open to all trustees, “Date to be confirmed shortly and advertised on the trust website”.

Once again thank you, and a very Happy New Year! Here's hoping for another season in the blue square south!

Will Jones
Truro City Fans Trust Chairman

Truro City can stay up, says manager Lee Hodges

Source: BBC Sport LINK

Truro City boss Lee Hodges believes his side can survive in the Blue Square Bet South after their 2-2 draw at Dorchester Town.

Jake Ash got a last-minute equaliser for City, who are still 14 points from safety at the bottom of the table.

"I'd love us to be in this division come the end of the season, it is a big ask, but it is possible," Hodges said.

"We've competed and been involved in every single game," he told BBC Radio Cornwall.

"If we can get that bit of luck and rub of the green we'll turn those draws into victories and defeats into draws and we'll climb that table.

"Hopefully we can catch up and get close to those teams around us because the bunch of guys I have around us are outstanding and they deserve to stay in this division."

Dan Thomson opened the scoring after 20 minutes for Dorchester before Kieffer Moore equalised four minutes before half-time.

Ben Watson gave the Magpies the lead with 15 minutes to go before Ash's late equaliser.

"It sums up Truro as a whole, a never-say-die attitude and always compete to the end of the game," Hodges said.

"We got our just rewards, we dominated the first half, created a lot of chances and should have gone in a few goals up but it wasn't to be."

Skipper Ash earns ten man Truro City point with last gasp equaliser

By Rhod Mitchell LINK This is Cornwall

Dorchester Town 2 Truro City 2

A superb stoppage time equaliser from skipper Jake Ash gave ten man Truro City a positive start to 2013 as they came away from The Avenue Stadium with a welcome point towards their battle against relegation from Blue Square Bet South.

Down to ten men after the 87th minute dismissal of midfielder Marcus Martin for two yellow cards and trailing 2-1, it looked as if City would begin the year with a dispiriting defeat.
Marcus was sent off at 87 mins.

But up stepped Ash with a superb 18-yard volley to ensure they made the trip back from Dorset with a share of the spoils from a game in which they trailed twice.

Dan Thomson gave the home side the lead after 20 minutes with a glancing header, but just before half time Kieffer Moore levelled for City shooting into the far corner.

The Magpies though regained their lead with 15 minutes left through Ben Watson with a good finish after Lee Hodges had blocked his first attempt and that looked to be that until Ash again showed what a crucial player he is for City with that last gasp goal.

City were again down to just 12 players for the game, with Bobby Hopkinson suspended and Barry Hayles and Todd Hanrahan unwell, and Steve Adams having work commitments.

But player-manager Lee Hodges was again delighted with the commitment of his players and said they deserved a point from the game which not surprisingly, was played on a very heavy pitch.

He said: "For the first ten or 15 minutes you could see we havn't played for a month but then we played some nice football, caused them a lot of problems and really deserved to go in ahead at half time.

"But in the second half, Dorchester started to get on top and pushed us back and we got deeper and deeper.

"And after they scored their second goal I thought, here we go again. But Jake popped up with a fantastic goal and it was a good way to start the year.

"But full credit to everyone we kept going and got our rewards. Kieffer took a big bang and carried on and Andy Watkins was phenomenal."

Hodges also paid tribute to the City fans who had made the trip to Dorset to support their team who are still 14 points adrift of safety ahead of a daunting trip to play second placed Welling United on Saturday.

City: McCormick; Hall, Ash, Hodges, Williams; Cooke, Broad, Martin, Afful; Watkins, Moore. Sub: Watts.

Half time: 1-1.

Goals: Thompson (20) 1-0, Moore (41) 1-1, Watson (76) 2-1, Ash (90) 2-2.
