Today we welcome Bedford Town as the season starts proper. All of the pre friendly’s having been played and Steve Massey has selected a team for this afternoons match.
Firstly I would like to dispel the myth that there have been cuts on players budgets this season - this is simply not the case. Yes we have made substantial savings on the management costs compared with last year but it is fair to say that Steve has a player’s budget at his disposal compatible with most Conference South teams and in some cases more.
It is also fair to say that I did ask Steve to promote local talent where possible and in this respect this criteria has been satisfied. It is now up to Captain Jake Ash, Paul Kendal, Joe Broad, Les Afful and Cody Cooke who have had Conference South League experience to step up to the mark and ensure that our young new players are quickly integrated into the team and become a formidable force.
Behind the team the infrastructure is in place. The new team Coach will be a great asset to the Club given the travelling to away matches and it will help to eliminate the fatigue caused by such journeys.
Back to this afternoon I hope you will experience an improvement in the facilities at Treyew Road. A lot of work has been done out of season including further improvements to the PA system and Hospitality Suite. There are still a few minor items to do but this will be completed as the season unfolds.
The opposition today will provide us with a good test for the team. It would be fantastic to come away with three points to start the season off in the right direction and put behind us the woes of the Conference South experience. Please ensure our visitors are treated with the courtesy you would expect on away trips and remember it’s the first match of the season in the Southern Premier League so do not expect too much! Safe journey home.
Peter Masters
Chairman TCFC.
