High-profile clash in the High Court
Source: This is Cornwall This is Cornwall Link
TWO high-profile businessmen look set for a High Court showdown over alleged debts of hundreds of thousands of pounds.
Property developer Kevin Heaney, chairman of Truro City Football Club, has locked horns with high-profile lawyer Chris Lingard – who previously acted as his spokesman.
Mr Lingard is managing partner at Threemilestone-based legal firm Follett Stock and director of the company Tiger Commercial (Truro) Ltd, which landed Truro City with a claim for £645,000 in London's High Court this week – just as the football club saw off a tax demand for more than £50,000.
Mr Heaney, who has bankrolled the club's unprecedented success, said he disputed the claim.
It is thought the claim may stem from an agreement in June 2009 whereby Tiger Commercial (Truro) Ltd was licensed to use the Truro City name and 3,500-capacity ground at Treyew Road.
Mr Heaney said the claim for £645,000 from Tiger Commercial on Monday had come "out of the blue".
Mr Lingard was unavailable for comment on Monday and Tuesday. Truro City has experienced a series of financial setbacks this year and was in the High Court on Monday when lawyers for Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs applied to have its winding-up petition, brought against the club over a tax debt believed to be in the region of £51,000, dismissed, almost certainly meaning it has been paid.
Lawyers representing four other companies applied to be "substituted" as petitioners in the case, claiming more than £700,000 of debts.
Registrar Derrett ordered that the company claiming the largest debt – Tiger Commercial (Truro) Ltd, which claims it is owed £645,000 – could take over the petition before adjourning the case.
Other alleged creditors named at a previous hearing include FBT Sports UK, which claims to be owed about £19,000, and Lexlaw Solicitors, which claims to be owed just under £1,400.
A fourth creditor, not named in court, claims to be owed more than £40,000.
In court Stephen Schaw Miller, representing Truro City, said each of the debts was "disputed" and would be opposed by the club.

Lee Hodges aims to firm up squad
Source: This is Cornwall
LEE Hodges is hoping to be able to announce the bulk of his squad for the new season at the start of next week after confirmation that the players have been paid the money owed to them.
City's boss has called a players' meeting at Treyew Road this evening to discuss next season and find out who intends to stay and who will be moving on.
Only right back Barry McConnell of last season's squad who finished 14th in their first season in Blue Square South has definitely departed after not being offered a new contract at the end of last season.
It is understood a number of players have verbally committed to staying and now that their wages have finally been paid it is expected they will put pen to paper.
However, there could be some departures with several players attracting attention from other clubs, with newly-promoted Woking thought to have expressed an interest in striker Andy Watkins.
But hopefully the bulk of the squad will remain at Treyew Road and there are also certain to be additions as Hodges attempts to consolidate City at this level – just two below the Football League.
Staying:
Striker Stewart Yetton has already indicated via Twitter that he intends to stay and will hopefully make his 300th appearance when the new season starts on August 18.
City fans will not have long to wait to plan their season as the fixtures are released on Monday.

Truro City players paid
Source: BBC
Truro City have paid their squad the wages they were owed for last season.
Players had agreed to take a 50% deferral earlier in the year as the club faced financial problems and a High Court winding-up petition.
The squad will meet club management later this week to discuss next season.
Earlier this week Truro had a winding-up petition deferred for four weeks after it was claimed it owed more than £700,000 to four creditors.
"I've spoken to a few of my fellow players and as far as I'm concerned everyone that I've spoken with believes that they've been paid all monies that have been outstanding," striker Stewart Yetton told Radio Cornwall.
"We entered an agreement with the chairman Kevin Heaney quite a while ago in terms of a payment deferral.
"That's what's been kept to and we've received the payments a week or 10 days later than we expected it."

Treyew Road pitch in superb shape
A team of volunteers led by Mark Brent have been nurturing and tending the pitch and surrounding areas over the last couple weeks. Half a ton of soil plus extra nutrients have been spread as well as new turf laid on the centre spot and goal mouth areas. In Summery conditions tonight, the pitch looked superb and ready for the first home game against Plymouth Argyle on Tuesday 24th July. Further maintenance work, such as painting and white-washing the changing areas will be required next week. Please call Mark Brent on 07814 392020 or Chris Webb 07917 126095 for details.

Lee Hodges keen to get going

Truro City now know the teams they will be lining up against in their second season of Blue Square Bet South football with seemingly an end to their well-publicised financial problems in sight.
Truro City now know the teams they will be lining up against in their second season of Blue Square Bet South football with seemingly an end to their well-publicised financial problems in sight.
The league line-up was decided at last Saturday's annual meeting of the Football Conference, held at Celtic Manor.
The new league season begins on Saturday August 18th and City will be hoping for a home start, after having to travel to Chelmsford City last year for the opening match of their first campaign at this level. The fixtures are due to be released on Monday, July 2nd.
With the club still under a transfer embargo because of its well-publicised financial problems the club has not yet been able to announce signings for the new campaign.
However, it is understood that the situation is expected to be resolved by today's deadline for payment to the players, with the winding-up order sought by Her Majesty's Revenue & Customs, in respect of more than £50,000 of unpaid tax, also thought to have been settled in advance of the hearing on Monday week.
And City boss Lee Hodges is confident of assembling a "competitive squad" within the club's budgetary constraints.
He said: "There will no doubt be a few comings and goings, but that is what happens at every football club, but I am looking forward to it."
The club have arranged a number of friendlies, including one against Plymouth Argyle at Treyew Road on Tuesday, July 24th.
Club secretary Mark Woolcock said that volunteers had been working hard on the pitch to get it in pristine shape for the start of the new season.
He said: "We want to get back to being a community club. It is not all about the first team, though they are our flagship."
The club will also have new kit sponsors for what they will be hoping will be a smoother season on and off the pitch.
